IMHO, the primary reason for sending as many robotic mission as we are to Mars is to better prepare for a manned mission.

I would agree that probes are cheaper, but I would disagree with you on them being better.

I've been told by several planetary geologist that the science Sojourner did over the whole time it operated could have been done in a half hour by a geologist in a spacesuit.
