Benton wrote "A concern with respect to return of samples from Mars has been the possibility, no matter how remote, that martian life forms could in some way be damaging or dangerous to planet Earth. However, the potential hazard modalities of an uncontrolled life form are many: infectious agents with medical conse-quences to humans or other important life forms, ecological prodigies that displace current species, or nui-sance organisms whose proliferation as pests would be unpalatable and/or economically injurious. Al-though the likelihood's are extremely low, these are not merely hypothetical possibilities."
As I suspected Barry's original post of abstract alone covered over the fact that Benton was aware the risk was very low despite not making that clear in his abstract.
