Other than making a buck off those uninformed souls who think they are going to Mars to colonize it, what good is the Mars Society? NASA already has their plans set and it does not include a human mission to Mars until all the dangers have been settled:

Grown men running around in fake duct tape and canvas spacesuits in Utah pretending they are on a Mars mission. This is the silliest thing I've ever heard. Only a mentally handicapped person would fall for this snowjob...or those with ego's the size of Mt. Everest.
The real Mars research is being done by NASA and the ESA. No need for a Mars Society club or whatever. For those that want to pretend they are on Mars -- go to MGM studio's amusement park. Pleanty of "pretend" space rides there. Of course, Space Mountain at disney Wolrd offers "realistic' space rides too! tee hee hee...
