The Saab Grippen is a sweet little plane

Saab managed to build a small, lightweight fighter capable of also performing air-to-ground and reconnissance missions without changing much in the way of equipment. If it performs like its older brother, the Viggen, it'll be maneuverable as hell. I've read that the Viggen was one of the few planes that could hang with a VIFFing Harrier in a jank-n-bank dogfight.

One interesting feature of all Swedish fighters is their ability to operate in austere field conditions, such as from their highways. All of the Swedish fighter designs of the past several decades feature good performance as well as STOL capabilities. Their range is considered somewhat short by American standards, but that fits into the Swedish Air Force's operational doctrine.

BTW: that image is almost certainly a CGI rather than an actual photo. It's still quite cool.
