Optical SETI

As many of you know I am in the profession of shooting a laser at unsuspecting stars, late at night sitting in the laser control room I like to imagine That 100 years from now "Grok The Supremely Slimy" on a distant planet gets a shock while observing our solarsysten and sees abnormally high sodium emissions, (the laser is tuned to the sodium D2 line), pulsing at 26 kHz...

of course this is whimsey- I am aiming the laser at where the star _was_ not where it will be... but it got me thinking and so I looked up optical SETI and found it is actually not too unreasonable... My question for the group is:

What wavelength would you use?
How would you encode a message?
Is this likely to be more profitable SETI search method?
