Would you want a foreign power to change the US leadership and democracy, forcefully? How would you feel about that?
I Saddam had the power, there is no doubt lots of countries would get to find out how they feel. Fortunately we don't have to worry about that for the foreseeable future.
Put yourself in the place of an Iraqi who's going through this , right now.
I believe they probably see us as the lesser of two evils.
Saddam is not even completely gone; he could come back, but there is a foreign occupying power that doesn't even speak his language, now. And this means that occupying power doesn't trust you. it humiliates you.
Saddam may not be dead but he is finished as the ruler of Iraq and he deserves all the humiliation heaped on him.
This is why international law cannot support forceful occupation of a country unless there's a threat to neighbouring countries which wasn't the case. This is why WMD's needed to be justified for the UN.
There is no effective international law except the law of power. We did it, we will stand by it and history will judge us only on the outcome.
Now, regime change means another regime, doesn't it? Which one? a pro-american one or one the Iraqis want? I'm absolutely sure that they cannot match completely. Partly, yes, but not completely.
I hope there will be a new government based on individual liberty and secular law. It will certainly be pro-American and a consensus of what the Iraqis want. Hopefully it will stay that way, time will tell.
No government suits all the people all the time. You have to put up with those pesky right-wingers, don't you? That's what we are trying to demonstrate for the Iraqis.
