re: Poll results are event-driven
In 1998 over 30 percent wanted to fly on the shuttle. Today the number would probably be far lower, due to the recent loss of columbia.
If a city was wiped off the face of the Earth by a medium-sized impactor, the polls would probably show 99% support for early warnings. Right now only 85% want a warning, because the rest think that meteors only exist in two classes: "shooting stars" and "ELEs".
