re: Did you get the "Wormer" from Symantec?

Yes, but I couldn't combine it with any bootable media to apply it.

I spent two hours with the lousy XP bootable floppys one can download from Microsoft. They are unsupported and there is an error on them on the second of the six that stops the reboot process in its track. Since they don't intend to support floppy bootable recovery media - it makes using a XP boot disk with the cure on it impossible. That's another plus for 98 - the bootable floppys actually work.

So with the system crashing and rebooting endlessly the only option was CD media. I'm sure someone more talented or with more patience than myself might have prevailed in uploading and running the fix.

If the machine had any serious data or writings on it, I would have likely sought more talented assistance - but as it was all of the software on it was restorable and only the lightest of documents were lost. It did lose some e-mail, but only that of a mostly unused account with e-mail of consequence.

Microsoft needs to completely rework then rerelease XP - as Windows03 or whatever. I have dozens of updates and patches on xp machines and I can only wonder how long you can effectively patch software without creating new loopholes to exploit that have not been properly tested. Testing on the fly is no way to sell software used by millions of folks.

Thanks for the concern Fox and keep 98 running as long as you can.
