The Heaven's Gate mentality...total escapism and ignorance.

You can't convince happy people with healthy relationships to kill themselves and others - it takes a dysfunctional, preferably illiterate social outcast to seek the paradise prromised by the fundamentalist clerics.

The difference between a Marshall Applewhite and a cleric - is that the cleric is killing children with no intent to strap the detonator on himself and applewhite created a web of insanity for other adults - one that he too was fully enmeshed within. In that sense the fundamentalist clerics are clearly even more evil than a deranged cult leader.

More TVs? More Radios? Free AOL? More fast food joints? A dozen libraries with 100 volunteer Mary Anne's diligently plugging away at the illiteracy rate? What could possibly save these folks from their abysmal ignorance?

PS
(My own personal belief note)
The sad thing is that those kids that depress that detonator will find themselves in a "hell" unimaginable where their victims will be chained to them more tightly than the tightest bonds - massive waveform magnetics. No virgins will await them - only demonaic entities whose hate matches their own and whose embrace sucks the very lifeforce of their soul. If & when they finally free themselves (or are usually assisted free by more advanced entities) of this most deadly embrace - they are born again - usually mentally retarded or deformed and society will again try and assist them in regaining sanity and balance within their consciousness. As justice would have it the clerics and the other fanatics spurring them on will be the fathers and mothers of these children, and will have to show them the care and love which they denied them earlier. It would be very interesting to find the rate of birth defects and mentally handicapped born to folks in the Palestine region - I would bet it is significantly higher than normal.
