Rifles and pistols are weapons for killing unarmed people. They are cowards' weapons. They are woefully inadequate to defend yourself from someone similarly equipped, but who is properly trained, and part of a team.
Ask the Libyans and Syrians what you really need to stop a REAL tyrant, not indulge your Red Dawn Johnny Tremayne fantasies.
If you're really out to stop a dictatorship, you need something that will take out an armored vehicle, or a helicopter gunship.
What did the founders have to say about TOWs and Stingers? Isn't there something in the Federalist Papers about that? Surely they would have equipped their "well-regulated militias" with them instead of semi-automatic muskets?
