There are too many of them, and they are too easy to get, and they are available with too many deadly accessories: big magazines, expanding bullets, easy convertability to full auto. And they are too easy to have without anyone knowing about it.
Its not just crazies, its gangsters, druggies, lone and serial killers, and kids getting shot by accident, by teenagers, by their spouses, in drive-byes, by complete strangers. You don't need a gun to kill, but it makes it so easy. And it makes it so common.
Compare per capita gun homicides in two very otherwise similar societies, USA and Canada. Canadians have crime, do drugs, and Canadians have hunting rifles, and Canadians die in bar brawls and domestic violence, and some are crazy. But you are 5 times more likely to be murdered with a gun (per capita) in the USA than in Canada.
