Bush administration now may skip Council, officials say

WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 — After a high-profile pitch at the United Nations for more countries to send troops to Iraq, the Bush administration is encountering resistance and may not seek a Security Council resolution after all, U.S. officials said Monday.
“WE HAVE not yet made a determination,†Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told reporters, alluding to the possibility of a new resolution.
Other officials, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, noted the strong stand that some U.N. members had taken against the U.S. decision to go to war with Iraq in March without the council’s blessing.
This is precisely why it was so foolhardy for the US to ignore the UN in the first place. Now that we finally need their help, they are reminding us that we told them we didn't need their help. Just imagine what they will say when we ask for help to curtail Iran's and North Korea's nuclear weapons program. We have sacrificed our world leadership in favor of Mr. Bush's short term gains in the opinion polls.
