re: Thrusters started firing to stabilize shuttle
Damage to the left wing increased drag on that side, causing the shuttle started to spin leftward. The thrusters started firing like crazy to stop it, like what is seen in this video inside Columbia cockpit minutes before breakup (70 MB download).
