Intersting. Tom's evaluation of Saddam's psyche is worth more than a huge gaping lack of evidence...
Come on, Powell laid out before the UN that there was fabulous intelligence as to the WMD... so fabulous that it justified going to war, without international backing and quite possibly in violation of international law. Good enough to spend hundreds of US lives, thousands of Iraqi lives, billions of dollars.
But not good enough that a quarter of a million people in complete (military) control of the country can't find anything particularly significant? There was the jet, yes (which somehow has become, to Tom, "fighters" plural)... do you really think that this could be made airworthy?? Jet fighters aren't like gold bars, to be buried in the desert sand without coverings and then dug up and flown. I have no idea why they buried it, maybe just to hide the fact that they once possessed one, but it sure as hell wasn't with the intent of flying it in the future. Come on, Tom, you know planes.
Plans found hidden are not weapons.
Facilities with no traces of biological materials are not weapons.
Focussing on the Nigerian uranium was simple, and easy to validate.
If they would release the vapourous intelligence about WMD in Iraq, maybe someone could spend some time evaluating it... in the meantime it's like trying to do an autopsy on a Yeti.
The vast amounts of intelligence you refer to were for the past, and Saddam undoubtedly had weapons and programs in the past. But the case was made for war based on the current situation. There are no sources that need protecting anymore, no methods that have to be kept secret... but the hard intelligence isn't any more forthcoming than are the weapons.
If nothing is found, how long will it take until you admit that there is nothing?
And if you do, will you admit that Bush et al lied? Or at the very least made a horrible mistake?
If the weapons are found, I for one will admit here that I was wrong. Ditto Yeti.
