re: The Iraq War in two different parallel universes

I find myself wondering, was Bush clearly presented by his advisors with the
best and worst case scenarios?

I would say, yes he was. Anyone watching Bush during those days of decision could see that he had a lot weighing him down.

The worst case scenarios were trumpeted from every anti-war group and newspaper. WMD attacks on our troops (they apparently believed they were there THEN). Months of pitched street fighting in Baghdad. Burning oil wells. Armies pouring in from surrounding Arab countries. SCUDs raining on Israel. Massive civil wars between Iraqi factions. Thousands of American dead, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi dead. Terrorists mounting more attacks on American soil.

Don't hear much about these things now. With the usual rewriting of their own history, the Left has now designated a couple of hundred dead Americans as the Worst Case Scenario.

I have been reading dozens of interviews by Rumsfeld and other defense personnel, and all of them discussed things they had prepared for that never happened. These included the oil well burnings, and destroying the dams. I don't recall any mention of anyone burning all the cities down.

Other surprises in the war included the almost complete lack of refugees fleeing Iraq, although huge facilities had been prepared at the Jordan border.
