Around here, when the younger kids would derail a conversation with a completely off-topic addition, my oldest daughter would reply to them with the phrase, "I like elephants." This would distract them long enough for the conversational thread to be resumed by the older people.
"I like elephants" is now a synonym for "non-sequiter" in our house. No political content is implied: "donkey" still means what it has always meant.
