It's stunning how liberals have suddenly become deficit hawks. I still remember the early Clinton-Gingrich years when Republicans talking about a balanced budget were laughed out of Washington.

And note the deafening silence about where deficits are really going to come from in the future. According to zthis paper, the fiscal imbalance of the Federal government is about 44 trillion, of which 99 percent is entitlements, i.e. social security and Medicare.

Bitching about tax cuts and the Iraq war ruining the economy is like complaining that a cat in a rowboat is overloading it while an elephant squats in the back.

And liberals (and some conservatives) are currently supporting adding new entitlements. Hey, why not invite a hippo on the rowboat, too?
