Emotional appeals through pictures don't work on me, Lindy. By now you are well aware of my views of guilt and/or innocents and wave form magnetics. While I wish these folks and children the best possible care and recovery, one has to realize that all wars have come with casualties and fatalities and many people will replay their worst cycles and often receive feedback from past action or inaction.
It would be equally easy to try and sway with video of someone screaming and pleading being put feet first into a shredder by Saddam and his henchmen. Or showing how many children died who were systematically denied medicines by diverting oil for food money to palace building.
I could attempt to sway by taking photos of the many who were once living until they were summarily executed and buried in mass graves, leaving only their orphans to mourn for them.
Such appeals to pity are not intelligent and interfere with decision making processes on a large scale. Compassion can assist victims, but sympathy and pity only magnify their suffering.
The media doesn't plaster such images around because such tactics are in very poor taste - much as we don't parade the bodies of our dead soldiers, who have died at the hands of terrorists. In civilized nations the stop and stare at accidents mentality is eventually outmoded.
You absorb all these things and respond to the targeted emotional appeals. Propaganda - that's all such appeals boil down to. Each side could use blood and guts to sell their view, the charities use the crippled and deformed to bring in revenue. The US plays the same game when it shows victims of the two towers.
When attempting to sway lots of people, the emotional appeal of graphic imagery is often used to stir outrage. I could use some of my own and say you failed to realize this:

Propaganda can cut both ways - and this was the tame stuff.
