I appreciate your sincere regret for the loss of life in a war that you based your support on stockpiled WMD. You feel betrayed and I can understand how you feel. I might feel the same if that was all my support stood on.
It is sickening that an incompetent, egomaniacal, bastard like Saddam was so infatuated with weaponry that he allowed himself to be deluded to the extent that he was hoist on his own petard when all he had to do to save his regime was come clean.
Had he come clean he would have been free to continue killing thousands upon thousands of his own people for years to come and perhaps his sons would have carried on the tradition for many more years.
The Saddam regime was a cancer that needed to be removed. Was it the right thing to do? If we finish what we started and leave behind a free people that will not suffer the brutality that was sure to continue, it was right. If we falter and fail to follow through it will be a tragedy of epic proportions. We will have improved nothing and saved no lives.
Are there other regimes that are cancers? Yes, but we can see that nation building is hard as hell at best and many of the nations that need to be reformed do not have the resources to establish a free society without complete dedication of all the people. Haiti is a good example of failure in a resource poor nation. Iraq has huge natural resources and a relatively well educated population. There is no country in the Middle East that has more potential to be free and prosperous.
Speak out against Bush, campaign against him and vote to replace him, if you choose but remember a murderous dictator is gone and we have important work left to do in Iraq and the news is not all bad.
