Well, first of all your statements aren't quite accurate.
Mr. Bush said Iraq was an imminent threat to the American people.
Wrong. This is a lie, being deliberately spread. The whole controversial idea of "preemptive war" DEPENDS on the fact that Iraq had NOT been widely identified as an imminent threat as yet. Even Davin said he would have supported attacking Iraq if it had been proven that they were about to immediately attack us in some way.
From Bush's State of the Union Speech:
Some have said we must not act until the threat is imminent. Since when have terrorists and tyrants announced their intentions, politely putting us on notice before they strike? If this threat is permitted to fully and suddenly emerge, all actions, all words, and all recriminations would come too late. Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option.
There is no way to interpret this other than that Bush is acting in a context where the threat from Iraq is NOT imminent.
He said Iraq possessed hundreds of tons of chemical and biological weapons that could and would be used against us. It wasn't true.
Not accurate.
There were hundreds of tons of chemical and biological weapons unaccounted for by U.N. inspections, and it is this fact that is constantly referred to in the justifications for war. Whether or not it turns out that there were active weapons stored in Iraq, the original inability to account for them, given Saddam's past history, was damning enough on its own. As for the Kay report (which I wish I could read in its entirety), I suppose plans and materials don't really count, and we should have just left Saddam alone with them.
I warned that the Left would try to make the proposition that if no live weapons are found in Iraq after months of effort on the ground with the Baathists swept from power, that Bush must have or should have known this before the war, and retroactively changed his decision.
Given the information available before the war, Bush made a decision. It is ridiculous to take things we are only discovering now and judge the decision based on that.
