As space enthusiasts I'd think we would like the idea that a (probable) meteorite gets such prominence.
Maybe you couldn't imagine an explanation for why they didn't carve it, but I can: people saw the meteorite fall from the heavens. That would be an impressive event, suggesting to them they should preserve the sign from the gods.
As for the Islamic claim in the link that Mecca is the oldest city, that's ridiculous, as are the claims of many religions.
