1) The first step is hit the HP site on the internet.
Always check online for more recent drivers than what comes with the printer or other device, and download them. Be sure you're matching your operating system.
2) Is this happening for everything you print, or just some things? My own HP laserprinter is a bit old, and has a hell of a time plowing through some PDF documents for some reason.
3) Make sure you are hooked up to the fastest USB port on your computer. Usually this isn't an issue--most computers only have one set. My old machine has USB 1 and 2, and my new machine has 2, and a card that gives it USB 3.
Note that in some cases, if you're using a USB hub, some hubs will default all their plugs to the lowest-speed item connected to it.
