Because of a feeling of humiliation and a desire for a clear identity, more than poverty or lack of education.
It's so similar to what motivated withdrawing from the colonies:
The people knew their standard of living would collapse, which it did.
They would rather make themselves mistakes than rely on foreigners.
Dignity is much more important than material wealth.
