There's an interesting story in France about the islamic veil.
Lila and Alma Levy were banned from a public school in Aubervilliers because they refuse to remove their veil in the classes.
They were invited with their father in a TV show last night.
It turns out their father is jew (secular) and he defends his daughters.
First, they never were pressured by any islamic group to wear the veil, it was their own decision; so according to a decision by the state council (years ago), as long as there is no proselitism on their part (which is the case, there is none), they have the right to wear the veil.
But other muslims who don't want to wear the veil fear it would force them to do the same too. Yet, apparently, Islam doesn't force girls to wear the veil anyway.
Veil at school are treated case by case (and there are fewer cases than in 1994) and apparently, somebody called a journalist, which inflated this case out of proportion.
Those two girls (father jew, mother muslim) are french and were born in France as well as their parents.
They don't want to go to a muslim school precisely because they don't want to get involved in islamic groups and politization and want a normal secular education in a public school.
And they seem quite bright and eloquent too.
