My last word on this matter

I am not a right to life extremist. I support freedom of choice abortion in most cases and I have no problem with terminating life support when it is appropriate.

I don't know what is right in this case. I only know it troubles me.

Fight-for-life bombshell

A key point: The case was not heard by nineteen judges. The case was tried and ajudicated by Probate Court Judge George Greer who has been supported by a handful of appellate judges who specified that Greer heard the direct evidence and testimony and had ruled without procedural error. The FL Supreme Court refused to hear the case and according to the linked story the federal judge gave it lunchtime treatment. I tend to believe that he would have been upheld if he had ruled completely opposite.

A lot has been said about PVS:

What about the second issue? Is Terri in a persistent vegetative state? Her family says no, and their opinion is buttressed by that of nearly a dozen physicians who signed sworn affidavits that she is not PVS – affidavits Greer promptly rejected as evidence.

Nearly a dozen sworn statements from Doctors that I have seen characterized elsewhere as highly respected, vs as few as three that testified at the trial. They may not have physically examined her but why would they swear as to her condition if they have inadequate data?

The linked article refers to a sworn statement by Sarah Green Mele, a highly respected speech pathologist, wherein she states that TS is not PVS and she is trying to talk. She is not a neurologist but I am reminded that we know a lot more about speech pathology than we do about the human brain. The fact is, when it comes to the secrets of the human brain, we have hardly scratched the surface.

Neurologists are often reduced to almost medieval excision of brain tissue when faced with swelling.

I could go on and on but I won't. If you read the linked information and still feel certain she should be starved to death, so be it. We'll see how it turns out.
