The easy answer is that, given the context you provided for him, all R.L. had to do was grunt and scratch his arm-pits to show a relative level of class and intellect.
The point is that RL (and EBnelsons, and evryone elses) responses tended to rise above the level of bodily excreta and the acts which produce them. Its not that their flames were a paragon of wit- its just that yours were the very touchstone of 'offensive-without-a-cause'.
As for any attepts in general to compare yourself intellectually to RL- I wouldn't generally advise that...

I care not, I just want to be able to read the Flame board with my usual chuckles instead of feeling nauseated. This is (at least for some of us) the comic-strip of the zone, not the sewer.
