Spyware and Kazaa:

Just use Kazaa lite. Its freely available. It does not come with the spyware. It has nebulous legal issues around it, so be aware.

You can root out the spyware from Kazaa, though it is not easy. Its reputed that you can not 'get it all', but I believe I did once. Just start googling processes in your task-manager applications bar until you find something, and then track down the .exe that goes with it and drop it in a file shredder.

Also, firewall-up and you can't brodcast what you are doing to anyone. Shut the P2P connection when you are not downloading (ahem) legal music files (/ahem)...KaZaa tries to stay 'open' at all times your computer is on and jacked-in, but you can shut it down.

P2P is just peer-to-peer connection, its how Kazaa works without a central server (and thus illudes the legal grasp of the RIAA thugs). P2P is not the reason KaZaa is an insidious bit of software- its what comes with it that is evil. P2P is just one of many connection protocols on the internet. Chances are, your ISP 'dialing' software is a P2P connection. P2P is GOOD IMHO, as it is a decentralized hard-to-trace connection method that can help insure privacy and circumvent various businesses who want to control internet commertce and traffic at the consumers expense.

Remember: 99% of high-speed ISPs dynamically assign IPs, and THEY are the only ones that have a map between your Identity/SSN and your IP-address-of-the-day. They tend not to release that short of an RIAA subpoena. Don't volunteer your personal data and it remains safe aas safe can get on the web.

In general, don't think of web communication as being as-secure as phone/letter communication. The web is a technological commons, and certain folks are as free to spy on you as they are free to watch you walking down the street. Privacy on the web is like privacy in public places- its your responsibility.
