not Shevardnadze, but his defense minister:
The defense minister said the military wouldn't intervene on the president's behalf after opposition supporters on Saturday stormed parliament and declared an interim government, forcing Shevardnadze to flee the building in a nationally televised scene.
Someone give that man a cookie.
It would have been so easy to go the other road as is often done. Those who have the guns have the power, and it was only the fact that the military learders were decent enough not to desire a higher place in future "Dictator" Shevardnadze regime that this country was spared what was almost an inevitable fate.
