Force fields
Could artificial magnetic shields be generated to shield limited habitats? I'm way out of my depth here, since I don't know the energy level of any charged particles that might make it to the ground, nor do I know how many uncharged residue particles (which magnetic fields do not affect) might be generated by the interaction of the charged ones with the upper atmosphere.
