Not a fairy tale.
I've seen plausable designs for an elevator that could go up within 10 years after the ability to make a suficently strong cable in a reasonable amount of time is available. It is entirely possible and very promising. The notions of a solid diamond tower surrounding the cable have to be dumped in favor of more realistic and economical designs.
I'll debate someone if they wanna go.
