Attn: ET, don't reformat that c-drive just yet.

Hey:

It turns out that 'Red Hat' as we know it is going to be exclusively an enterprise software- like $800 bucks! Free 'RH x.y' will be replaced by Fedora, but the catch is that the 'Red Hat Network' (RHN) for non-enterprise (RH x.y and fedora 1.0+) linux may go the way of the dodo(unless you pay $400 to $800 for enterprise!).

I had naievely(sp?) assumed Fedora would use RHN for updates.

Red Hat Network was the real soul of RH Linux- every day you could log on and get the latest drivers, security patches, peformance patches and etc for free patched right into your OS. It was the real 'value' component of RH.

This is a real deathblow to the entire RH community, and the community is looking at it as a massive betrayal (and RH will die without community support). Folks here at CMU are spitting blood, and places like CMU are their fertile grounds for contributions!... So Red Hat may have to change its policy here. But either way, you may wany to take a deep breath and wait a month or two before you install redhat, or if you really want the linux thing, check out debian or some other distro.

Let me put it this way. Everyone who is running RH is gonna either have to migrate to enterprise for hundreds of dollars or deep-six their server and start over. As someone who once ran an enterprise server, the very thought of that makes me ill. RH execs better have good data security... I'd never do anything, but I bet more then a few unsavory SysAdmins might.

This really pisses me off, as I was days away from dumping one of my windows 2000 systems and putting RedHat on.
