re: exploits

I've found, from my experience and that of several others is that RH versions 6.2 - 7.0 were big jucy targets for hackers. I can't speak for anything later than those versions. Mine was constantly being taken down. The only thing I ever did that stopped it was run Bastile (a hardening script designed for Redhat, I highly recommend it) and that took care of the issue as far as I could tell.

It was a long time ago and I can't remember all of the specifics, but each time when I looked up what the problem was it was usually something that just targeted Rh and Suse, or RH and some Debian version X, RH and etc. . . I just got sick of it.

I've since used RH8, SuSe8 and Mandrake9, but none of them have been online since it so hard for me in particular to get a connection over here so I can't vouche for them, I pretty much just stick with knoppix if I do anything online.

then certain things were a pain in the ass because RH would alias commands so you couldn't use certain flags. that was particularly painfull when trying to delete a 100+ test directory of posts.

While I am on the topic I may as well complain about the lack of balls from these larger distros. RHs XMMS does not ship with the capability to play mp3s anymore for fear of propriety(making it useless, an mp3 player that cant play mp3s?), And Suse doesn't ship with a functional Mplayer. Linux Mplayer BTW has got the be the best media player out there, surpassing even MS Media Player in codecs supported (even quicktime and real player codecs are supported). It even lets you manually sync audio with the [] keys! how cool is that?!?!?! MS would never do that, they would rather just pretend that a problem shouldn't exsist in the first place and never implement a feature like that. Trying to get a goot media player in linux used to be such pipe dream, now its better than in windows!
