nonetheless

The point obviously strikes home from your reply. Basically he is saying this group of people support Bush and yet don't get much from him. The Democratic party also has groups like that, that they can take for granted knowing they were unlikely to vote Republican.

For example African Americans are vulnerable in that no one expects them to vote Republican, so they are limited in what they can demand. In the same way the blue collar male gets very little from the Republicans, probably because the Republicans don't believe they need to give them much for their vote. If they staged a mock revolt about this they could end up with some major concessions.

The NASCAR and confederate truck group that Dean pointed out are in the same boat. The Republicans have a limited amount of money to give to their supporters so the most fickle tend to get more of it. The Hispanics probably get more attention because they don't vote overwhelmingly one way.

This is what Nader complained about on the other side. Environmentalists don't get as much from the Democrats because they know few of them would vote Republican anyway. Unions also can often be ignored because they donate mostly Democrat though overall apparently the workers are only slightly Democratic. Of course one could also argue many companies give large amounts to the Republican party and no one gets to vote about this at shareholder meetings.

It's a paradox of democracy, the more devoted a group is to a party the less they end up with. Dean recognizes this and may be planning to make overtures to this group on the raw deal they get. Bush obviously intends to try the same thing with Blacks and Jews like in the last election.
