I have worked on a conceptual design using a recoverable parachuted engine module (with an existing engine--not an SSME) and a disposable propellant tank that has SSTO capability with fairly decent margins. While this is not technically SSTO, it's pretty close, with the tank almost in orbit like the Shuttle tank. It's not impossible by any means.
