It really helps...

...if your introduction to hard alcohol is green Tequilia on St. Paddy's day which tastes somewhere between listerine and what one imagines toilet bowl cleaner tastes like.

After imbibing a few shots on an empty stomach and feeling the aforementioned attempt to give you an early ulcer - it's much easier to stick with a glass of wine and the liqeurs that come inside expensive euro chocolates. A little rum or Loch Lomond in tiny quantities.

Never really felt like a saint or a prude - but I never understood the eagerness of some of those around me to turn parts of their brain off. When you know about the blood and its filtration through ALL your organs - ingesting toxins is never able to be romanticized or justified.

That kept me away from liquor and the vision of my dead grandfather at the mortuary when I was only 10 helped to keep me from smoking. (Perhaps the last year of his life wired to oxygen tanks and gasping for breath might've helped too.) So many of that era were never really told of the real dangers of incessant smoking. The smoker's cough was just an irritation on your "T" zone that changing to a milder brand could cure. "The big C" was the phrase used to describe what no one wanted to discuss. It ticks me off, because it's so da-- unnecessary.

Now my "sins" are limited to staying up too late and indulging in diet sodas like they were water (well it is their primary ingredient;-) Too much responsibility to get any more indulgent.
