NASA and public relations

Stanley Kurtz at NRO has noticed something that I think we all have--that NASA pretty much sucks at public relations.

The NASA TV footage yesterday showed interviews where you couldn't hear the questions, and footage of the control room showing their responses during the landings without the communication audio that told you what they were responding to (the latter was corrected today.)

The brand new Mars Center at NASA Ames closed early the night of the landing. And anyone remember the big fuss a while back about how NASA was going to start a brand new media organization? I can't even remember the name now.

I get the impression that the PR office has about two guys in it, working their butts off. Obviously, NASA TV is horribly undermanned as well. On the other hand, JPL and the rover people seem to be getting the stuff out on their sites.

For an organization funded by the public, PR seems to be a bad place to save money. Am I wrong?
