I'm with McFly on this. The very simplest answer would be that you have your graphics card set to 8 bit or 16 bit color, probably the former (256 colors). Almost all graphics systems can be driven up to 32 bit color ("true color").

On a PC, you can usually change the settings by just right-clicking on your desktop.
