The stock market crash grounded them, though some are moving forward.
One thing that helps with the lunar missions is the light speed delay is short enough that you can have a moderately interactive relationship with a rover. Not to mention that you are close enough to transmit continuous, real time HDTV quality imagery. That opens up the possibility of making money through "virtual reality" setups at theme parks and science museums, to at least follow along with the rover, not only visually but if you couple a 3-axis motion platform (like the flight sim rides they have) to the gryos on the rover, you can feel yourself bouncing along. Even the possiblity of letting people drive the rover for a bit.
One of the orbiter missions that is in the works would send back continuous, full-sphere HDTV quality images, for projecting on OMNIMAX domes or a full-fledged VR helmet setup so that you are basically flying along with the orbiter, look over there and see Earth, look down and see Tycho, whatever.
God knows I'd pay some money!
