Evolutionary Question

Earth has had at least 3 major masss extinctions and a few minor ones. If this system is similiar, it probably has had some also.
Now the question:
1. If earth had had one less mass extinction, would mammals in our form be the dominant species?
2. If earth had had one more major extinction, would mammals (assuming they survived) have developed to our point yet?

If there is an earthlike planet orbiting this star, they could be well behind us or a few million years ahead of us (give or take an extinction or two).
