I remember a couple of years ago when a large sooty cloud around a mile long was discovered over Calif. and was determined to be from a Russian rocket launch that burned kerosene. You couldn't see it with the naked eye but detected with instruments.

The good news was that the Russian rocket launches were few and far between, otherwise there would have been concern.
