"Super size me!"
Haven't seen the actual actual documentary, but this is largely a load of horseapples. Try eating nothing but lettuce for a month and see what happens.
A look at the documentary site reveals more than a few fingers on the scales:
The rules? For 30 days he can't eat or drink anything that isn't on McDonald's menu; he must wolf three squares a day; he must consume everything on the menu at least once and supersize his meal if asked.
Obviously, if you forcefed yourself this way, any restaurant would probably kill you. Everything on the menu at least once? I don't know anyone who eats at McDonald's that way. I hear he won a Best Director award at Sundance, which probably isn't hard if you are taking a shot at one of the Left's favorite archetypes of Evil Korporate Amerika.
I would have no problems eating every meal at McDonalds, especially if I cheated and went to the one near here that has the imitation Starbucks feature including pastries. They have orange juice and water instead of sodas, and one small item makes a meal if you're not being weird about it. For one whole summer at college I ate every evening meal at Burger King since I had no kitchen facilities in my rented room, and with no car, no place else was within walking distance. I lived, and gained no weight. Believe me, it's hard to gain weight when you have to get around town without a car.
My kids love McDonalds, and eat there at least once a week. Neither kid is overweight, but running around like a couple of crazed squirrels probably has more to do with that than diet.
Their new big salads, with a chunk of chicken, are damn good and feature Paul Newman salad dressings. This is one of my McDonald's staples, and a vast improvement over those ratty salads they used to have in plastic cups. I don't like the one with blue cheese, though. My usual meal otherwise is a single McChicken, and a few fries stolen out of my kids' meals. The fish is good, but I have to scrape off most of the tartar sauce, and it repeats on me.
Burgers are not worth writing home about, but few fast food burgers are. Well, Wendy's burgers are good, although each one is probably 80,000 calories worth of tasty fat. You want to see someone turn into a sphere, have them eat Wendy's burgers every day. In-and-Out is okay, too, but I don't like the fries. Go figure--they actually chop them from whole potatoes in front of your eyes.
McDonald's french fries are excellent, if and only if they are REALLY fresh. Their french fries have a half life of about ten minutes of crisp tastiness. Then they decay into just sort of chewy potato things. Edible, as Wolfe would say. My kids come along to the drive thru so they can eat the fries on the way home.
