Information. At least for me.

Every piece of information that tells how something like this can happen can be used to help prevent it in the future. All accident investigations are this detailed. As for myself, I help design manned space systems, and would like to design systems that allow astronauts to walk away from accidents. Information on the survival of things like the crew cabin, or items that one would not think would survive such a reentry, are vital pieces of data in this design process. And I'm not the only space designer that reads this board.

When Challenger went down, NASA largely sat on the analysis and it only dribbled out over long periods of time. A critical piece of information, like the fact that at least some of the astronauts survived the explosion and were probably alive all the way down to the ocean, tells me a lot about what really happens in a LOX-hydrogen explosion and what can survive it.

I didn't say the information would be pleasant. This kind of analysis never is.
