Black churches

It cannot have escaped your notice that the history of the Africans in America included, for the first 200 years, a lack of above-ground social institutions except for religion. Their white owners believed that religion was good for the Negro, as it taught that obedience was good, anger was bad, murder was worse, and good people would eventually be free in heaven, so worship was allowed. As a result, the only ubiquitous black social organizations worthy of the name were churches for many decades after emancipation. They were the centers of community, of learning, and of political action.

As for your equation of Leftist political beliefs with religion, I no longer suppress my laugh. You were bound to make that absurd observation; to do otherwise would have left me with the field, and we can't have that.

If you equate irrational social science beliefs with articles of faith, surely there are similar conservative notions. "Trickle-down economics" would qualify... "Pure capitalism" is another.

I didn't know you attended Leftist political rallies. Yet another insight.

Mary Anne
