Cui bono?

Who stood to gain from the lies perpetuated against Iraq? Who was responsible for the lies?

By now it should be quite clear that there was an impressive body of knowledge testifying against the possession of WMD by Iraq. To this day, I've not seen a single convincing report which supports the contentions of the Bush admininstration - and others - that Iraq constituted an immediate danger.

Of course, sombody wanted Saddam out of the way, so ask yourself the simple question:

Who stood to gain?

Jerusalem - A government critic said on Tuesday that Israel was aware before the war against Iraq that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction, but Israel did not inform the United States.

Another view came from Scott Ritter, who led United Nations weapons inspections in Iraq for seven years before resigning in 1998. He told an Israeli newspaper this week that Israel knew for years that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction.

Interests sometimes overlap, of course, and we've all heard the observation that politics makes strange bedfellows, but in the final analysis, certain parties have gained from deposing Iraqi dictator Hussein, and it should not be difficult to identify them.
