OK OK yes it was imperative to do some safe science 1st in case eqpt malfunctioned. Take the pans. Look at te nearby interesting stuff under a microscope, etc.
But clearly NASA is not adventurous. This is an agency that thinks doing yet another LEO mission 30 years after we went to the moon is adventure. The Roviz solar cells will probably degrade from dust before they overcome their fear of failure and subsequent criticism by the press and really GO somewhere.
