"For a self-supporting tower, aim for a height to width ratio of around 10"
Now I think you are being excessive- you could probably do that on Earth & designed high winds. The CN tower is somewhere around a ratio of 6 and is designed to withstand 180 mph winds. Your average telephone pole have higher ratios. This totem pole looks like it got about a ratio of about 20- it was once a tree with branches, living hundreds of years. http://www.city.victoria.bc.ca/cityhall/departments_compar_prkttm.shtml
