It wasn't until after I posted the follow-up in the thread I started below that I saw you'd already put it here.
The point you make is a good one: the young man in question could just as easily be characterized as a "gun nut" as he could a "militant Islamist" or - as I called him - a "mercenary wannabe". Pigeon-holing, stereotyping and profiling are all areas on the continuum called xenophobia. They have limited use as categories when organizing investigations into real and present dangers (personal or societal), but are not sufficient for rational thought about, or action towards, the groups they categorize.
