My heart goes out to you. A while back my upstairs toilet wouldn't flush. No amount of pumping with a plunger would do anything, no amount of chemicals.
Tore it out, and tried from the other side.
Nada.
After a week and a half of screwing around, I sealed it and hit the thing with compressed air. Moved something. Did it from the other side, moved it again. Back to the first side, moved it back to where I could get a grip. There had been so many chemicals in that toilet that there were no bugs within 30 feet. Any more and it would have been a Superfund site.
I pulled out a very bald tennis ball. Must have been dropped by the pooch when he went to get a drink, and then flushed by me.
Good luck. I didn't have chunks on the ceiling. That's the sort of thing you can't just ignore and hope the wife takes care of it.
