Current Events » in reply to Will John F Kerry's association with Jane Fonda (Hanoi Jane) be a major factor?

The little matter of dates

The genuine picture, of Jane looking up Madonna-like (that's the religious figure, not the pop star) at the speaker, with Kerry squinting up several rows back, was taken at Valley Forge in 1970. (Scroll down almost to the bottom of the page to find the caption with the date.)

Jane Fonda went to Hanoi in 1972.

That she was against the war in 1970 is a fact. So were a lot of other people, including John Kerry, who had seen it up-close and personal, as a volunteer.

Nobody had foreknowledge in 1970 of what Fonda was to do in 1972. So the picture is of Jane Fonda. Hanoi Jane didn't make an appearance until two years later.

So many people have a visceral reaction to her very image that they forget she had a life before 1972.

To associate Kerry with Fonda's trip to Hanoi based on his lack of clairvoyance is irrational. But political campaigns have been won on the basis of irrational accusations before.
