One factor that I think is neglected is that life on Earth has had the advantage of genetic modification to rather exquisitely match the conditions here. Trying to match those conditions somewhere else probably can't happen.
We might be better off taking a planet with a 20% oxygen/80% nitrogen atmosphere, 1.0 gravity, average temperature of around 60 F., and KEEPING it livable.
I'd suggest that if we were terraforming someplace, and John Q. Resident insisted upon driving his SUV even though there was the possibility it was degrading EVERYONES atmosphere, ol' John Q. would be lynched.
I still think our best shot is trying to take care of Earth, even if we can afford to ruin it.
The US is seeming to be behaving, in my absolutely, completely, model-for-everyone-to-follow humble opinion, like a rock band in a hotel - trashing it just for the hell of it, because we can afford to. (Humility is my long suit. "Humble" is what I do best. Better 'n anyone!)
The opinion expressed above is Bowsers (and every other right-thinker) only.
And is just an opinion.
However well thought out.
By Bowser, acting alone.
